With a week to go until the 2011 LIWF kicks off, most visitors will be starting to plan their day(s) at ExCeL.  With 1,500 exhibitors under one roof, that takes a lot of planning, but ones to watch include:

Connoisseur Estates (Stand F6) presents premium France, Spain, Chile and Australia: New wines, new packaging and a new wine producer from the premium regions of the Old and New Worlds are the focus for Connoisseur Estates. All of the wines are aimed at independent retailers, wholesalers and the on-trade. Available to taste will be: Sidewood Estate, Adelaide Hills - made by world renowned Natasha Mooney, Château d'Anglès La Clape - presented by winemaking duo, the legendary Eric Fabre and his son Vianney, Champagne Autréau - new packaging on the entire range, GRM Estates, Bordeaux - including Dédicace from former French rugby captain Fabien Pelous and Bodegas Luis Gurpegui Muga Rioja and Colchagua Valley - including 2010 Vinadrian, a leading Rioja on-trade brand.

Specialist French wines supplier Dedicated Wines Ltd (stand O21) will present new opportunities for UK multiple retailers from six French regions."Our aim is to offer UK multiple retailers wines which deliver real cash margins to them and real value to their customers. France is better placed than any other country to provide that" say Ed Squires and Richard Evans of Dedicated Wines Ltd. On stand will be: New brand Les Dauphins from Cellier des Dauphins - a wine which is set to take leadership of the Rhône category by offering a high volume, highly promotable Côtes du Rhône with high impact packaging.  The highly awarded and well-regarded La Différence from Languedoc-Roussillon - new vintage 2010 favourites Viognier-Muscat and Carignan will be presented alongside Grenache Noir. The four latest wines from Louis Moreau, the third-largest producer in Chablis with 120 hectares. Le Hameau Sauvignon Blanc from Charente and new addition Pinot Noir from the Loire Valley, and great value Bordeaux Petits Chateaux and Bordeaux brands Grand Plessis and Grand Place.

Italian specialist importer Grossi Wines (stand N52) will present a recently extended portfolio of over 90 wines from 30 artisan Italian producers aimed at independent retailers and the on-trade. Managing Director Carlo Grossi says his mission is "to offer customers high quality Italian wines from small, independent Italian producers who exclusively hand-pick their grapes and employ traditional methods of production." Visitors to Grossi Wines' stand N52 will be able to taste the full range of award-winning wines, which includes a supertuscan made from air-dried Sangiovese grapes, organic Nero d'Avola from a seven hectare farm in Sicily, and a "baby Amarone" Valpolicella from Roberto Mazzi's tiny estate in the Veneto. Highlights include a chance to meet producers Terre di Fiori, Tenuta Duecorti, Lahnhof and Pometti, all of whom work with the renowned master oenologist, Carlo Ferrini.

Internationally acclaimed South African winemaker Johan Joubert from Kleine Zalze (stand I36) will present his latest wines, with a particular emphasis on premium ranges for the on and off trades. Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection, Vineyard Selection and Family Reserve wines are distributed by Matthew Clark, whilst the Zalze and Foot of Africa brands are handled by Stevens Garnier. Johan Joubert will be showing his latest vintage releases and a selection of the wines which have netted a total of 29 awards at Trophy, Gold and Silver level in international competitions in the past year.

New Zealand trio The Crossings, Crossroads Winery and Southbank Estate (Stand O72) will demonstrate premium sub-regional style from the areas currently hitting the headlines with wines from The Crossings Awatere Valley, Southbank Estate Awatere/Wairau Valley, and Crossroads Winery Hawke's Bay. Pancho: Vamos a consolidar la promocion "marca España". . .si fragmentamos la promoción fragmentamos el dinero. .

"WINE IS FOR LIVING, NOT FOR DRINKING…"

Fenavinjuancruzulymartinr

Hailing from the Canary Islands, the writer Juan Cruz who considers that wine is "a vital companion", will be moderating the round table 'Wine and the Novel' at FENAVIN, at which the writers Luis Landero, Clara Sánchez and Manuel Hidalgo will also be participating, the same on May 12th at 1.00 p.m.

"There are pleasures that are damaging to the economy and to our health, however, wine is a pleasure that is actually recommended in order to live longer. The fact is that wine is for living, not for drinking…". The journalist and writer Juan Cruz (Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, 1948), author of numerous novels and winner of countless awards such as the Azorín Award in 1988, or the 2000 Canary Islands Literature Award or the 2009 Comillas History, Biography and Memoirs Award, among others, is quite clear on the important value of wine in the history of literature, cinematography, journalism and, of course, in his own life.

The Canary Island born writer, who is personally celebrating the 35th anniversary of the creation of the daily newspaper El País, of which he was one of its prominent figures, is convinced that wine is "a companion, a very special person that matures in repose and that does not offend anybody, unless they are very insistent" and, he does indeed believe that "it makes us better persons."

These concepts, on which he is very clear, are the ones that have led him to be the perfect moderator at the round table 'Wine and the Novel', round table in which the writers Luis Landero, Clara Sánchez and Manuel Hidalgo will also be participating, this on the upcoming May 12th, with Juan Cruz assuring that "it will be very easy to lead this group, because each and every one of them has a gift for words, and as I was commenting with Vargas Llosa a few days ago, there is no merit in asking those who always have fabulous answers."

In Juan Cruz's opinion, the relationship between wine and the novel has been eternal. "There are many novels that overflow with wine and there is much wine in films. In Baroja, in Cela… in countless novelists throughout the history of literature; even in journalism there are numerous chronicles that could never have been written without wine," the writer affirms, also recalling the discoveries that Ernest Hemingway made thanks to wine, or that "wine is Manu Leguineche's heritage of taste."

Although he is sober when he writes, he does acknowledge that there are many moments when wine is necessary: at a dinner with delicious viands and when there are prospects for a good conversation, or in other situations designed for pleasure and creation. "For example -I remember-, that a few days ago I interviewed Luis Landero and, right before we started talking he put a glass of wine in front of himself.. Luis, for example, needs wine to whet his appetite, so to speak."

Cruz also admitted his love for 'Manzanilla' wine, "which really cheers me up" or for a well-chosen wine. At this point, he acknowledges his wife's skill to select wine. This is when we asked him if he thinks that there is a difference in sensitivity between men and women to choose and enjoy wines -one of the subject matters of the round tables that will be held at the trade fair, with the writer Carmen Posadas and the journalist Marta Robles as moderators-, distinction that Cruz categorically rejects. "There are men and there are women, each one of us different from the other, but I am certainly not in favor of divisions based on sex," he affirms.

"We have to pamper wine and explain that it forms part of life's most real pleasures"

In that pertaining to the drop in consumption of wine in Spain, something that is highly pronounced in recent times, he thinks that a good way to recuperate a taste for wine at the dinner table is "to pamper wine and explain that the tolerant king of alcohol forms part of life's most real pleasures."

Following up along this line, he is in absolute agreement with FENAVIN's goal of giving consumption of wine the prestige it deserves, linking it to positive values in the world of culture, health, or sports. Hence finally defining the National Trade Fair on Wine, set to open its doors on the upcoming Tuesday, May 10th in Ciudad Real, as "a very professional trade fair that is completely dedicated to wine and to universalizing a taste for the same."

THIS YEAR AT FENAVIN ROBIN GOLDSTEIN WANTS TO DEMYSTIFY THE RATINGS ADVOCATED BY THE GREAT GURUS OF THE WORLD OF WINE

Fenavinrobingoldstein

This year at FENAVIN the revolutionary American blogger will be talking about the wager he is making on simpler, cheaper wines, as opposed to the pricey labels that receive the best ratings in the world's most famous wine guides, which is one of the themes he writes about in his blog 'The Wine Trials'

This year at FENAVIN the American blogger Robin Golstein is aiming at dismantling the myth of the wine guides and wine classifications promoted by the great gurus of the international world of wine, publications that quite often lay down the law in that pertaining to the tastes and prices of many of the world's wines, as he duly explained in the interview that he gave to the trade fair's organization.

It is in his website, The Wine Trials, where he champions the double-blind tasting session as a guaranty of honest reviews made of a wine, as in his opinion, "when we taste a wine, we are also tasting all the things we know about the wine."

Goldstein, who studied Neurology at Harvard and is a Law Graduate by the University of Yale, will be offering the keys to enjoying wines, independently of labels or prices, this during the chat he will be giving at FENAVIN, which will take place on May 11th at 11.00 a.m.

Question. What are the main conclusions obtained from the work you have been carrying out in the last few years in The Wine Trials?

Answer. I have really learned a lot during this time that goes from the first publication through to the current edition of "The Wine Trials 2011" and this has been because of the constant process of updating that I have carried out. One thing that has really changed in this time are the consumers, as in these difficult economic times, they are increasingly aware of how absurd high prices in the wine market can actually be. Year after year, the consumer is exacting more value, and by way of blind tasting sessions and with experiments such as ours, those who drink wine have learned that quite often they find the same pleasure when they drink cheaper wines as they do with the more expensive ones. The result of these two factors has been that the demand for wines that cost more than 25 or 30 dollars a bottle has dropped drastically.

Nowadays the only thing that is keeping sales of high priced wines going is the ever-increasing demand for luxury brands in emerging markets such as China. It is in countries such as these, where there is a short history of wine consumption, where the nouveau riche tend to follow the recommendations of the "experts", experts that still perpetuate the myth that a really good wine has to cost hundreds of dollars a bottle. Thankfully, this myth is disappearing in other places. Even American consumers, who have not really been drinking wine for as long as the Europeans, are now ever more skeptical about this type of snobbery.

The quality of quite a few wines that cost less than 15 dollars a bottle and that have been included in "The Wine Trials 2011" classification actually reflect the interesting fact that wine producers are now responding to the market changes. Thus they are offering better wines in this segment and, in some cases, all they have done is lower the prices in order to compete in a cheaper market. This trend is truly in benefit of lovers of wine worldwide.

Q. Is there some sort of confrontation between Robert Parker and The Wine Trials team? Do you think that Parker's new book, which includes recommendations of wines that cost less than 15 dollars, has been inspired by your work of the last few years?

A. Well, I'm not actually sure if Parker and his publishers have launched this new guide on wines for less than 15 dollars in response to the success enjoyed by "The Wine Trials", or if the new book is actually in response to the exploding demand there is on the market for cheaper wine. At any rate, I do believe that there are tremendous differences between his approach and mine. The most important philosophical difference between us is that Parker's classifications acknowledge wines that are "heavier" or more full-bodied, with a higher concentration of alcohol.

In turn, he practically ignores the main wine categories that follow-up on the 15-dollar category, such as a Provençal rosé or a Spanish cava. These are the segments in the cheap wine market that are undergoing more growth, however, Parker and his colleagues, such as the incredibly pretentious David Schildknecht, don't even consider these wines worthy of mention in their guide book. When I recently reviewed Parker's book for The Journal of Wine Economics, I wrote the following:

"Schildknecht simply dismisses a Provençal rosé as an "ocean of cheap rosé wine", "existence" of which is largely blamed on the "uncritical behavior" of "tourists who flock there" (although the "natives" share some blame as well). As a result, only the "small upper echelon" of rosés is "interesting." "How ignorant are those tourists on the seaside who gaze out at the waves and simply enjoy the refreshing local wine with their grilled seafood instead of complaining about how uninteresting they are!"

My colleagues and I take the opposite approach in The Wine Trials. We do everything possible to highlight the fact that the price is not necessarily an indication of bad quality, but rather the point where prices should naturally tend to fall.

Q. What influence do the great gurus of wine have on the consumers' choice of wines?

A. Despite the important influence that the wine gurus still have in that pertaining to expensive wines, I do believe that their influence on consumers of simpler wines is quickly diminishing. This is not only because they are skeptical about the outrageous prices, as I mentioned before, but also because of the growth of the Internet as a new platform to evaluate wine and exchange opinions.

Of course not all wine bloggers know what they are talking about and, undoubtedly, there are a bunch of crazy consumer motivators out there whose only goal is to obtain free wine, acting as they do as the puppet of any public relations agency. However, there are now many great, independent wine writers who are also acquiring power, be this through their own blogs, videos or comments on other wine sites, acting in opposition to the gurus that are overrating expensive wine and who want to maintain their status quo.

This diversity of opinions is insuring that consumers become aware of the fact that famous wine critics do not necessarily have a monopoly over flavor.

Q. How is Spanish wine perceived in the United States?

A. I am a great fan of traditional wines, of terroir wines, such as the wines of La Rioja and other regions that have not succumbed to Parker's view of what a great wine should be. I am in search of wine made by producers such as López de Heredia, Cune or Marqués de Murrieta, in which the soil, flowers and evocative style can be seen and savored in their wines. In my opinion, their prices are very reasonable in comparison with other traditional regions of the old world, as is the case with Burgundy.

Moreover, perhaps, what I admire the most about La Rioja is that these wines tend to be liberated after spending several years maturing in the bottle. I love the fact that Spain resists and does not liberate wine when it is still too young to be drunk. We cannot really expect all consumers or all restaurants to have a huge cellar, or the patience to wait for years until they can drink a certain wine.

Q. Do you believe that Spanish wine would be more successful on the US market if it was sold with a unique "Wines from Spain" label, or do you think that it is better to be present on the market with different designations of origin?

A. I think that distribution of all of Spain's wines under a sole denomination is a terrible idea. Not only would this confuse the consumers in the US (as would also be the case anywhere else), but it would also be an insult to the diversity and heritage of Spain's noble wine tradition.

Q. What are your upcoming projects?

A. I am currently involved in a very interesting project that is bringing together my academic facet with my most popular work, and it will have a more specific impact on the world of food products and wine. I have just laid out the foundations of the Sensory Perception Center at the Culinary Institute of America in California's Napa Valley. This new project is in collaboration with the Stanford Business School, the French INSEAD and a few outstanding researchers from the field of neuroscience, sensory science and behavioral economics. The goal behind the project is to carry out experiments that will help us reach a better understanding of external influences and of the slant that is contrary to intuition in our own sensory experience.

For example, we are trying to understand why we have more pleasant flavor experiences when we think a wine is expensive than when we are told that we are drinking a cheap wine, or why some foods taste better when we know that a famous chef has prepared them. It is not simply a matter of mere snobbery. It is a profoundly human phenomenon that affects all of us. Traditionally these types of phenomena have been spurned under the general title of "placebo effect". The most thrilling project for me is to be able to come to terms with these effects as part of what makes us human, and admit our suggestion when dealing with tastes. We also want to find the way to liberate the power we all have within our own brain in order to have incredible experiences with our sense of taste, without any need for external signals that trigger these sensations.

Q. What is your opinion of FENAVIN?

A. In one word, it is overwhelming. The last time I was here was in 2009, when I had the honor to meet Santi Santamaria, one of the last great controversial voices in the culinary world. I was lucky enough to meet him before his premature death, which was indeed a very sad moment for the gastronomic community. I do believe that the will of this trade fair is not only to gather together the experts from the world of wine, but also intellectuals from all over the world and from different fields, which is what really marks the difference in comparison with other events of this type.

I was so extremely bewildered by the variety of wines that I tasted the last time I was at Fenavin, in 2009, that I basically decided to focus the tasting sessions on wines from regions that I was familiar with, such as the Canary Islands or Castilla-La Mancha wines. Even so, I felt that I had just barely scratched the surface. I hope this year to really broaden my horizons and experiment with other regions of Spain that I am not familiar with, all this while trying to stay sober in the process. I sincerely consider it a privilege to have been invited once again.

THIS YEAR AT FENAVIN RENOWNED JOURNALISTS WILL BE ENHANCING THE PRESTIGE OF WINE AND CHAMPIONING ITS MODERATE CONSUMPTION

The round table "Wine and Journalists", moderated by Juan Ignacio Gallardo, Assistant Director of the daily sports newspaper Marca, will be held on May 12th at 1.00 pm.

Juan Ignacio Gallardo, Assistant Director of the daily sports newspaper Marca, along with Paco García Caridad, Director of Radio Marca, Roberto Gómez, sports journalist for the same daily newspaper and for Marca TV, Ángel Cabeza, Editor of the daily sports newspaper Marca and Juan Carlos Rivero, sports news anchor for TVE, will all be participating in the round table "Wine and Journalists" that will be held at FENAVIN 2011, during which they will all put forward what their perception of Spanish wine actually is.

The veteran journalist Paco García Caridad, who along with the painter Antonio López and Vicente del Bosque, Manager of the National Spanish Football Team, were appointed Ambassadors of Wine at FENAVIN, defines wine as a food product that represents both the Spanish land and its culture. He considers that mankind, since ancient times, has always been closely connected to wine, as is duly made manifest in the Bible, for example. He highlights the social values that wine has as a product that is to be tried, shared and talked about, likewise mentioning its healthy aspect due to its antioxidant properties, polyphenols and resveratrol (a type of natural phenol), among other components that are very beneficial for the human organism. As a great connoisseur of wine, he feels that there is a lack of unity between the designations of origin and non-existence of a Spain wine label, this as opposed to other emerging countries such as South Africa, Chile, Argentina or Australia.

He is also categorical, stating that "wine is a business, but not a business at any price." Above all, the winery owner-winemaker must also be a farmer who takes good care of the soil and who controls the entire production process. Hence the reason why it worries him that lately Spanish red wines are losing out in nuances and in their attachment to the land, as recently most wines seem to be monotonous and it is impossible to observe the peculiarities of each variety and of the terroir itself.

On his part the sports commentator Roberto Gómez will be explaining the social values of wine as a standard of reference in Spanish culture and more particularly in the culture of La Mancha, land of vineyards par excellence. "Wine is an element of unity, of friendship. A glass of wine is synonym of good vibes."

Juan Ignacio Gallardo, Assistant Director of the daily sports newspaper Marca, will be responsible for moderating the round table, during which different aspects of wine will come under analysis, along with its gastronomic, social, cultural and economic values, among others. This round table is indeed an interesting proposal that FENAVIN has made in order to become acquainted with the opinions that some of our outstanding sports journalists have about the world of wine.

"SPORTSMEN AND SPORTSWOMEN CONSIDER WINE TO BE AN ALLY"

Juan Ignacio Gallardo, Assistant Director of the daily sports newspaper Marca and the Journalist Olga Viza will be in charge of moderating two encounters at FENAVIN that will be debating on the relationships between sports and wine

The relationships between wine and sports, two worlds that are apparently far away from each other, but that have ended up coming together because they share the same values, representing a complement within all that considered to be a healthy lifestyle, will be holding the starring roles at the two encounters that will take place at FENAVIN, the National Trade Fair on Wine that will be starting on May 10th. The sports journalist, Juan Ignacio Gallardo, Assistant Director of the daily sports newspaper Marca and the journalist Olga Viza, who enjoys a sound and lengthy trajectory in the world of sports, will be in charge of moderating these round tables in which prestigious personalities from the world of sports will be sharing their experiences and impressions on sports and wine.

One of the goals behind this initiative is to approach all that wine and sports have in common, the same based on an open perspective and from the point of view of its major figures: former high level sportsmen and sportswomen who will be chatting about their projects and experiences in that pertaining to wine. Juan Ignacio Gallardo, writer and journalist with more than twenty years experience working for the daily sports newspaper Marca, mentions that the idea behind this activity is to "demonstrate that sportsmen and sportswomen consider that wine is their ally. It is also an everyday element in the world of sports, as it forms part of the lives of these athletes in a very special way when they retire."

The current Assistant Director of the daily sports newspaper Marca will be in charge of moderating the first round table, 'Wine and Sports', which will be held on the upcoming May 10th at 1.00 p.m., counting with the participation of Alfonso Pérez, Manuel Sanchís and Rafael Martín Vázquez, all former football players, along with Pato Clavet, former tennis player. This round table will focus on the project that has been undertaken by Manuel Sanchís, former football player with Real Madrid, who once retired from football decided to upkeep the values of comradeship and friendship through the world of wine, the same by founding a winery in Ciudad Real and inviting his friends to participate in it. Bodegas Casalobos is located in the municipal term of the Ciudad Real town of Picón and it currently has three partners who are well-known sports figures, these being none other than Emilio Butragueño, Michel and Aitor Karanka.

However, Manolo Sanchís is not alone in this adventure, as there are other former athletes who have also decided to produce their own wine. The latest outstanding case is the star of the South Africa World Cup, Andrés Iniesta, who has just recently started to make wine with his own name, produced with grapes from vineyards that are located close to his home town of Fuentealbilla (Albacete).

This is not however the end to the relationship between sports and wine. According to the latest studies made in sports related dietetics, moderate consumption of wine can actually become an ally for the sportsman due to the beneficial properties of this product, in particular in those cases in which the human body is subjected to tremendous physical effort. Wine helps to regulate the digestive system, contributing to the absorption of proteins and with beneficial effects over the respiratory and circulatory systems. All these properties hold an important role in maintaining a healthy diet, this of course as long as wine is consumed in moderation and with responsibility. This is something in which both Juan Ignacio Gallardo and Olga Viza agree upon, with the latter underlining that thanks to her lengthy experience as a sports journalist, she has had the opportunity to see the moderation, responsibility and knowledge that the professionals of the world of sports have with regards to wine consumption.

The journalist Olga Viza, one of the most outstanding professionals in our country's sports media sector, will be in charge of moderating the second round table on 'Wine and Sports', which will take place on Wednesday, May 11th at 1.00 p.m. The starring roles in this second encounter will be held by different personalities from the world of sports, such as Gica Craioveanu, former Hispano-Rumanian football player, Rafael Sandoval, Sommelier for the restaurant Coque, Rafael Guerrero, former First Division football referee and Paolo Futre, former Portuguese football player.

This second round table will giving the floor to the same professionals from the world of sports who will be talking about their experiences within their different scopes, hence contributing to the participants becoming familiarized with the relationship between wine and sports, which is actually a much closer relationship than anyone could first expect. If we take into account the prestige that the world of sports enjoys in our country, the support of these personalities does indeed represent an important boost for Spain's wine industry.

CHARLIE ARTURAOLA: "FENAVIN THINKS GLOBALLY, NOT LOCALLY"

The internationally renowned Senior Wine Sommelier and Professor of Wine, will be in charge of leading four chats that will undertake matters as stimulating as "Spain, the Top Designations of Origin" or "Wines that are Good Quality for Money… that will enthrall us"

The internationally renowned Senior Wine Sommelier and Professor of Wine, Charlie Arturaola, will be bringing four proposals to FENAVIN, which is to take place in Ciudad Real from May 10th to the 12th, with the very stimulating titles of "Spain, the Top Designation of Origin", "Pedigree Wines from Castilla La Mancha, "Wines that are Good Quality for Money… that will enthrall us" or "The Battle of the Palate: White, Rosé and Red Bubbles".

Arturaola, who will be coming in to Fenavin thanks to the Castellano-Manchego IPEX (Institute for Foreign Promotion of Castilla-La Mancha), highlights the important work that the trade fair is carrying out, underlining that "FENAVIN thinks globally, not locally", praising the great and precise machine that is behind this organization, "which understands synchronization of this great wine trade." And this is the reason, according to the famous sommelier that this trade fair has achieved what nobody else has been capable of: "to open borders and business to the wineries of all of Spain."

In this sense, Charlie Arturaola pointed out that "this trade fair puts on display all that is new, trendy and innovative, educating us and sending us home, by the thousands, thinking about visiting a winery or a region that we have come to know at the trade fair". In the opinion of this professional, this trade fair "inspires all of us who make up the wine business to create and spread the word about these new regions and small wineries that are arising."

Arturaola also added that "FENAVIN, in just ten years has managed to capitalize and commercialize, promote and fraternize with the entire world of wine in just three days, reaching markets as far flung as India, Vietnam, China or Hong Kong, which is something that no other trade fair has achieved."

Four fascinating proposals for the senses

This Senior Sommelier and Professor will be offering four chats within the frame of FENAVIN. The first of them, "Spain, the Top Designations of Origin" will be taking place on May 10th, with the three remaining following-up on May 11th, all of them set to be held in the Custodio Zamarra tasting hall.

Arturaola has chosen a great variety of wines and grape stocks from the country for his first chat, all of which are giving rise to much talk. According to its director, this chat is based on the denominations that are being promoted the most in Canada and the United States, and also in markets such as Brazil and Hong Kong.

Highly consolidated designations of origin will be tasted during the session, such as Rías Baixas, Valedoras, Txacoli Getariako, Ribera del Duero, La Mancha, Rioja, Navarra and El Bierzo, dissemination of which has been very important in the last few years on the international market, according to Arturaola. During this session he will be talking about renowned vine stocks, and a few that are not quite as known, although they are also regional and correspond to "blends" of each designation of origin, hence covering all sorts of styles, prices and a wide range in which quality is the predominant factor.

The three tasting sessions that will take place on May 11th are all dedicated to Castilla-La Mancha. High-end wines will be tasted in the first of these tasting sessions with Arturaola, "Pedigree Wines from Castilla-La Mancha", during which a variety of styles and prices will be investigated. Hence analyzing a phenomenon that has recently taken place, which is the arrival in this region of great wine families such as Alejandro Fernández, Freixenet or Martínez Bujanda, along with other personalities from the world of sports, as is the case of the new wine maker Iniesta, FC Barcelona player.

"We will have to try these wines in order to prove to the rest of the worlds that these wines are overflowing with style, tannins, fruitiness, balance, harmony and that they can easily compete with those that have achieved worldwide fame," the sommelier stated.

This session will be followed by the tasting session "Wines that are Good Quality for Money… that will enthrall us". Charlie Arturaola has chosen wines that have a good quality-price ratio for this tasting session, "wines that will undoubtedly enthrall the importers that participate in the tasting session."

Arturaola is of the opinion that the wine's price is not a determining factor of its quality, as what the taster is actually looking for in a wine is harmony between its elements. "There are excellent wines in this region that have a good quality-price ratio, barely 1,25 Euros a bottle, although there are also 'super super Premium' wines that can be bought for 20-30 Euros and that make the region proud. These are indeed enticing prices for a foreign buyer, because currently it is not easy to find 'gems' like this anywhere else in the world." He also adds two more factors to this situation: the variety of wines in the region in which autochthonous grape varieties are being combined with international varieties. "Experts all agree that the important thing in wine is its taste in the mouth and not the price," he adds.

In the shape of desert, Arturaola announces that "there will be many surprises in "The Battle of the Palate". The new and mystical wineries, which are offering modern wines with personality, silky smooth tannins and fruity textures, are leaving behind the endless years of ageing and offering a refreshing vanguard style of young wines."

THIS YEAR AT FENAVIN THE WRITER JOSÉ LUIS MORALES WILL BE RELIVING HIS CHILDHOOD YEARS IN THE DECADE OF THE FIFTIES

Joseluismoralesa

The Ciudad Real born poet and International Miguel Hernández Award laureate will not be disappointing the participants at the trade fair with his delightful anecdotes about his childhood spent in his grandparents' vineyard

The journalist, writer and professor, José Luis Morales, will be introducing the participants of the National Trade Fair on Wine, to take place on the upcoming dates of May 10th to the 12th, to his childhood yearnings and experiences, which are intertwined with the yearly harvest on his grandparents' vineyard estate.

The writer, who is also a poet and International Miguel Hernández Poetry Award laureate, will be reeling off all the experiences and curiosities he remembers from his childhood. A childhood that took place during a period in time that was extremely hard in that pertaining to wine production, all this at the conference 'The Grape Harvests of my Childhood (the fifties)', on May 10th at 6.00 p.m.

The founder of the Guadiana Group and of the magazine Manxa de Ciudad Real, considers himself to be a lover of the fine wines of La Mancha and of Spain in general, indicating that he is, "an amateur, yet diligent lover of wine".

José Luis Morales (Fernán Caballero (Ciudad Real), 1955) will be regaling the audience with the vicissitudes of his childhood spent on his grandparents' estate in 'La Puebla' (Ciudad Real) during the decade of the fifties, "where there was neither running water to be found, nor electricity nor even a teacher", he underlines.

At the time, he recalls, the grape harvest was one of the most sociable tasks around, work that involved the entire family: from the kids who were in charge of taking the drinking jug round to the workers, right through to the mothers and fathers who worked from "sunup to sundown" in order to harvest the grapes, and including the elderly, who were in charge of making the meals, usually "gachas or migas (ancestral staple dishes made with flour or bread) cooked in a 'trébedes' (three-legged cooking utensil made of iron), of which everybody would partake with a sharp switchblade and a hunk of bread". Afterwards we would all go back to work, walking several kilometers on foot so as to ease the burden for the animals, he adds.

Red and White Grapes in the Same Vineyard

From his own personal point of view and based on his own recollections, "to which on occasion literature contributes more than memory itself", the harvest was just like a festival because many workers from a village in Toledo would come to his family's estate. In addition to these workers there were at least fifty or sixty workers more who also joined the ranks of harvesters, most of them very young, which meant that the bedrooms were a riot at night, to the point that even sexual appetites had to be accounted for". He remembers that in those years the simple sight of a woman's calf "was indeed serious business", because women at the time always covered their head with a headscarf, and they always wore long sleeves, "so just imagine what it must have been like for a kid to see the harvesters washing up at the river."

He also comments that there was no cellar on his family's estate, "only the 'plantío' (field of crops), as his family called it." The grapes would be brought in on carts drawn by mules and mares to the Miguelturra or Fernán Caballero cooperatives. Most of the harvest corresponded to white grapes, Macabeo or Airén varieties, with some red grapes, Cencibel or Tempranillo, "and although they were all planted in the same vineyard, they were actually harvested separately, even though they would sometimes be mixed together."

These anecdotes and many others, such as a highly amusing and curious anecdote related with ice, the flooding of the Jabalón river, a World War II truck or a story about a papal chair, will indeed not disappoint those participating in the chat. The same in which the only pretension that the speaker has is to make the participants smile, "with claims being admitted if they don't break out in laughter," he affirmed.

He will be accompanied at this FENAVIN conference by the lawyer and co-owner of the winery Bodegas Arúspide (Valdepeñas), Agustín Gil del Pino, with whom he shares literary bonds and friendships, such as that of the well-remembered late Paco Creis, founder of the A7 Group along with Agustín Gil del Pino.

José Luis Morales is a Philosophy and History Graduate, "licensed, if not career, journalist", writer and poet. He has written six books of poetry, thanks to which he has harvested four national awards (among them the National José Hierro Award) and an international award (the 'Miguel Hernández' Award) and another four review books, two plays and several travel books.

THE DEFENSE OF WINE’S INBORN PROPERTIES WILL BE THE SUBJECT MATTER OPENING THE ACTIVITIES TO TAKE PLACE AT THE SIXTH EDITION OF FENAVIN

This technical session will be offering the keys on the characteristics and situation of these types of wines in Spain

The activities at Fenavin, trade fair that will be held from May 10th to the 12th, will be kicking-off with the conference 'Natural Wines, the True Wines of the Terroir', during which the founding member of the Spanish Association of Producers of Natural Wines -PVN-, Julián Ruiz, will be revealing all the characteristics and the situation of these types of wines in Spain. On his part, Jørgen Ljøstad, producer of natural wines in the Italian Piedmont, will be explaining his experience as a Norwegian producer and importer, hence giving the conference a more international approach.

Getting down to business, by natural wine we understand any wine that is produced with the minimum possible intervention. The result is a true reflection of the soil in which the wine is born. The difference with regards to organic wines is that these are even more orthodox in that pertaining to the prohibition to use chemical and mineral products.

According to the Decalogue of the Spanish Association of Producers of Natural Wines, currently formed by thirty wineries, these wines must comply with the following requirements: cultivation that is respectful with the environment; commitment with the natural surroundings. In addition, the vine grower is the author of the entire process, controlling the vineyard, all the work executed and taking all decisions; authenticity and singularity, referring to the prohibition to buy bulk wine and the defense of manual and artisan work, and finally, total sulfur dioxide (SO2) used cannot exceed 20 mg/l.

Julián Ruiz, founder of the winery Bodega Ecológica Bruno Ruiz, first winery in the province of Toledo to produce organic wines; founding member of the PVN Association and Director General of the Esencia Rural Group, specialized in the production of artisan products, will be telling us about the trend that now exists on the market to produce natural wines and food products. Ruiz affirms that we are somewhat delayed in Spain in comparison with other producer countries such as France or Italy, despite which in La Mancha we could indeed obtain natural wines with more structure, that are elegant in mouth and nose and exceptional in quality. "There is no doubt that Spain is a wine producing country with great possibilities and potential, however, we are lacking in experience." In as far as consumption is concerned, we are currently seeing a trend, in which Europe seems to have a lead over us. A trend towards organic, natural and biodynamic wines, all based on similar parameters, with some nuances, in their desire to obtain wine that develops the personality of its terroir and grape variety, with all these producers likewise sharing a common criticism of the uniformity and industrial treatment of wines.

FENAVIN WILL BE THE CHOSEN SEAT FOR ACEVIN'S FIRST EDITION OF THE 'RUTAS DEL VINO DE ESPAÑA' (ROUTES OF SPANISH WINE) WINE-TOURISM AWARD CEREMONY

The reason of being of this contest is to recognize the merit of the best wine-tourist initiatives that have been put underway in this country, the same within the frame of the 'Rutas del Vino de España' project

The Award Ceremony will be taking place on May 10th, at 1.00 p.m. at the National Trade Fair on Wine (FENAVIN) in Ciudad Real

The 'Asociación Española de Ciudades del Vino' (ACEVIN) (Spanish Association of Cities of Wine) will be hosting the first edition of the Wine-Tourism Awards "Routes of Spanish Wine" during the celebration of FENAVIN 2011, the internationally renown wine trade fair that will take place in the Ciudad Real trade fair grounds on the upcoming May 10th at 1.00 p.m. These awards represent a new proposal to promote and encourage development of wine-tourism, which counts with the support of Turespaña and the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs. The ceremony will be hosted by José Fernando Sánchez Bódalo, President of Acevin, along with Gonzalo Ceballos Watling, Assistant Director General for Tourist Development and Sustainability (General Secretariat for Tourism - TURESPAÑA) and Josefa Lueso Sordo, Assistant Director General for Food Promotion (of the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs).

The event, which will be taking place at FENAVIN 2011, National Trade Fair on Wine, in Lecture Hall 2, represents an institutional event in the shape of an award ceremony for the first edition of the Wine-Tourism Awards 'Rutas del Vino de España'. The laureates will be toasting this initiative along with many institutions, personalities from the world of academics, viniculture, tourism and journalism, with the basic goal of the awards being to stimulate the important effort made by all the actors involved in this Product Club, which has already become the most important quality wine-tourism project in our country.

These awards will be handed over by José Fernándo Sánchez Bódalo, President of ACEVIN and they will be taking place on an annual basis. Since the year 2001 the Spanish Association of Cities of Wine (ACEVIN) and the Secretary General for Tourism have been jointly working on encouraging viniculture tourism, the same with the creation of the Product Club "Routes of Spanish Wine". This club currently groups together a total of twenty-one routes, which in turn involve more than 400 municipalities representing thirteen of the Autonomous Communities and about 2000 companies (winemaking and tourist companies). All of this highlights the tremendous efforts that have been made in wine-tourism matters in the last few years. It is precisely within this frame that ACEVIN has promoted the creation of the Wine-Tourism Awards "Routes of Spanish Wine" as a system that acknowledges and stimulates the important work that is being carried out by all those involved.

The award ceremony will take place within the frame of FENAVIN 2011, trade fair that will be held from May 10th to the 12th in the capital of the world's greatest wine producing area, Ciudad Real. There are two crystal clear goals in its sixth edition: to promote, even more, the possibilities for the offer and demand to come together and to propose new paths so that consumption of wine can acquire the prestige it deserves.

Hence, the confirmed attendance of more than 700 international buyers, from more than fifty countries, comes to prove that both goals can indeed be achieved. The professionals that will be coming in on their own must also be added to this figure, currently estimated for this edition at almost 2000. Another great development of the trade fair will be the start-up of the 'Contact with…' program for national buyers, which is a computer tool that in previous editions has been working beautifully in the establishment of contacts between exhibitors and foreign buyers and that this year aspires to bringing in about 4500 Spanish distributors from all the country's regions.

The Secretary of State supports the Product Club "Routes of Spanish Wine" for Tourism and by the Ministry of the Environment, Rural, and Marine Affairs, currently counting with twenty-one routes. Bullas Wine Route, Jumilla, La Mancha Wine Routes, Wine and Brandy from Jerez Route, La Garnacha Wine Route (Campo de Borja), Lleida Wine Route, Montilla-Moriles Wine Route, Navarre, Penedès Wine and Cava Route, Rías Baixas, Ribeiro, Ribera del Duero Wine Route, Rioja Alavesa, Somontano, Tenerife Wine Route and Utiel-Requena Wine Route. All these representing sixteen certified routes, while Alicante, Bierzo, Condado de Huelva, Ribera del Guadiana and Rioja Alta are currently immersed in the certification process.

THE FIRST GUIDE ON ORGANIC SPANISH WINES AND CAVA, VINUM NATURE 2011, WILL BE PRESENTED AT FENAVIN

Fenavinguiavinumnatureportada

This guide offers an approachable definition of organic wine that is free of technical or regulatory complications, along with basic concepts on organic agriculture and the singularity of organic and biodynamic vineyards

FENAVIN 2011, the National Trade Fair on Wine, will be hosting the presentation of a real scoop in the editorial world: 'Vinum Nature 2011, the first guide on organic Spanish wines and cava', which will be presented by its main author and director of the publishing house Ecomundis Editorial, Pablo Chamarro, who defines the guide as "an unprecedented summary of more than six hundred wines and cava produced by our country's wineries and producers." This activity, programmed to take place on the morning of May 10th, will also be counting with the participation of the founder of the winery Bodegas Begastri, Alfonso Marín, who will be offering his personal view on the origin, values and trajectory of organic wines.

Vinum Nature 2011 puts forward the virtues of organic viniculture, the health benefits behind consuming organic wines and a first analysis of the current offer that includes a complete catalogue of quality-price ratios and the main characteristics of each wine. "The idea has also been to offer a way to approach the more specialized sector forums and events, along with other information that has been developed for the first time ever in a publication that is unique in its kind for this product category," Chamorro indicated.

Hence, this publication refers to organic wines as those wines that manifest sincerity and respect for the consumer, tradition and the environment. "These are highly valued quality wines that have received many awards abroad, in different markets in which year after year they hold more prominence," the author affirms.

With an editorial advance of 2000 copies, the Vinum Nature 2011 Guide will be sold on the Internet via the portal www.vinumnature.com and it will also be available at the Bioculture Trade Fairs that will take place in Barcelona and Madrid. Apart from this, all those attending FENAVIN will receive a 3 € discount coupon for the purchase of this guide at the mentioned web address, the same valid until the 31st of December. The next edition, VN2012, will also be available in bookshops, wine shops, and other direct sales points.

The Ecomundis publishing house premieres its 'Colección Nature' with this guide, with the collection being dedicated to disseminating and analyzing organic products for the consumer, duly promoting the variety and quality that is to be found in the same.

FENAVIN 2011 WILL PAY TRIBUTE TO THE PAINTER, ANTONIO LÓPEZ, AND TO THE MANAGER OF THE NATIONAL SPANISH FOOTBALL TEAM, VICENTE DEL BOSQUE, AS AMBASSADORS OF WINE

Fenavindelbosque

The trade fair will also pay homage to eight outstanding winery owners, importers and national and international market analysts, all this during the ceremony 'Una vida dedicada al vino' (A Life Dedicated to Wine)

The guests of honor will be received at the event by José Piris, Mime and Gestual Theatre Clown and a Flamenco Show will also be offered by the renowned 'bailaor' Fran Vílchez

During the sixth edition of FENAVIN, which will be taking place on the upcoming May 10th to the 12th, a total of eight national and international awards will be presented to outstanding winery owners, importers and distributors that have dedicated their lives to the promotion and dissemination of wine and its culture, and to leading personalities of the world of art, sports, design and communication, such as Antonio López, Vicente del Bosque and Paco García Caridad, who will all be appointed ambassadors of wine.

The ceremony is to take place in the Marcos Redondo Music Conservatory of Ciudad Real, on May 11th, at 8:00 p.m., with FENAVIN duly recognizing and paying tribute to the work that these persons have carried out in the world of wine, logically each one from their own discipline.

A Night of Wine and Art

The guests of honor will be received at the ceremony by mime clowns who in turn have been inspired by the world of wine, with the ceremony then being followed-up by a Flamenco show and by the national and international award ceremony 'Una vida dedicada al vino' (A Life Dedicated to Wine). After another musical performance, this time combining mime and flamenco, the evening will be brought to a spectacular closing with the appointment of the four new Ambassadors of Wine.

The artistic part of the evening will be coordinated by Miguel Muñoz de Morales, with the international mime and gestual theatre clown José Piris, disciple of Marcel Marceau, who along with his Gestual Theatre Company "Mimox" will be the highlight of the event, representing different sketches in collaboration with diverse members of the "Noveau Colombier" International Center.

Flamenco will also have its moment during this evening of recognitions, in this case with the company of the well-known "bailaor" Fran Vílchez, who will be presenting his show "Temple Flamenco" with which he has reaped in much critical and public acclaim. "Temple Flamenco" is formed by a series of flamenco "palos" (styles or dances) that sort of blend into each other, giving rise to a very special and particular stage and choreographic energy, bringing together modernity and tradition in equal parts.

The artistic evening will reach its end with a surprise fusion-show by José Piris and his Company, accompanied by the art of flamenco performed by Fran Vílchez's Company.

"A Life Dedicated to Wine"

The "2011 A Life Dedicated to Wine" Award Ceremony, which will take place at the National Trade Fair on Wine, will be paying tribute to the trajectories of the winery owners Alfonso Monsalve, of Vinícola de Castilla (Manzanares) and Doroteo Navarro, of Bodegas Navarro López (Valdepeñas), as well as to the impresario Alfonso Cortina and the consultant Juan Antonio Mompó.

Alfonso Monsalve has been the Director-Manager and Chief Executive Officer of Vínicola de Castilla since the year 1982. In 1983, he became one of the company's shareholders, with another five persons later on also becoming shareholders of the company. In the year 2010 Vínicola de Castilla was producing seventeen different varietals, including all the processes involved, ageing, organic wines, sparkling wines, sweet wines, grape marc brandy, etc. The winery has undergone an important transformation under Monsalve's direction, including an excellent technical fitting-out that has covered both the vineyards and labels. Monsalve also participates in viniculture associations such as FEVIN (Regional Federation of Wine, Alcohol and Grape Juice Producers), La Mancha Designation of Origin Regulation Council and other professional associations such as CEOE-Cepyme (Spanish Confederation of Employers' Associations-Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Sized Companies).

On his part Doroteo Navarro is the President of 'Navarro López', one of the most modern and successful wineries of Valdepeñas. The company was actually founded in the year 1904, with Doroteo Navarro carrying out the necessary reorganization in the decade of the eighties, hence consolidating the project and turning the company into an entirely family-run enterprise. The winery's operation currently covers 150 hectares of vineyard, with its facilities reaching a total surface space of 12,000 square meters. It distributes its labels Don Aurelio, Castillo San Carlos and Premium 1904 worldwide, to more than thirty countries, with all these labels having obtained important awards.

The impresario Alfonso Cortina, who is also the President of the winery Pago de Vallegarcía, is an Industrial Engineer and Economics and Business Management Graduate and he currently holds several posts in diverse national and international companies. Pago de Vallegarcía, which is one of his most personal projects and the one that he pampers the most, is located right in the heart of the Montes de Toledo, in the area of influence of the National Cabañeros Park and its wines, which are produced with the winery's own grapes, are highly recognized in the world of wine.

Juan Antonio Mompó Gimeno represents the fourth generation of a family that has always been dedicated to the wine sector. Graduate of Law, he has carried out his entire professional career at Bodegas Vinival, leading Spanish wine export company, where he started with financial administrative tasks to then gradually take on more responsibilities, becoming the company's Director General in just a few years. Vinival was first acquired by the Bodegas y Bebidas Group, after which it was taken over by the English multinational company Allied Domecq and Pernod Ricard, with Juan Antonio Mompó holding different positions of responsibility until the year 2009, when he left the company. Mompó has also been a member of the Valencia Denomination of Origin Regulator Board.

International Awards

Although not quite as well known on the national scene, the laureates this year are considered referents in the distribution and promotion of Spanish wines. This is the case with Michéle van den Bossche, first businesswoman dedicated to importing Spanish wines to Belgium. With 'La Riojana', which was founded over thirty years ago, she has managed to find a niche as a client of wineries producing quality wines pertaining to all the Appellations. 'La Riojana' was one of the first importers to participate at FENAVIN, more than ten years ago now, the same with the goal of opening up future paths with the participating wineries.

Hailing from Japan, Chieko Konagaya is a market analyst for the Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy in Tokyo and she is also the representative for promotion of Spanish wines on the Japanese market. Chieko represents a referent in commercialization of Spanish wines in Japan, covering both the Japanese distribution channels, as well as offering support to those Spanish wineries that want to enter this select market. She learned Spanish in Salamanca, Spain and has been enjoying wine and sharing the moments it gives rise to ever since.

Nicolás Burridge (1934) is an importer and distributor of Spanish wine in the United Kingdom. He is married to a Spanish woman and he is hopelessly in love with our country, its culture, food, and wine. When he celebrated his fiftieth birthday he had the opportunity to become an importer of Spanish wines, hence founding Burridges of Arlington Street, the same with the goal of finding and importing premium quality wines, manufactured with native varietals from Spain's diverse wine regions. At the beginning, he received support from Wines from Spain and his company gradually started to have an impact. In the year 1991, his daughter Teresa joined the company and as of then both the interest in Spanish wines and sales of the same started to really flourish and grow. He has traveled the length and breadth of the United Kingdom in order to make the gospel of Spanish wine known to all in trade fairs, tasting sessions and dinners, promoting interest in Spanish wine and bringing groups of people from the United Kingdom to Spain in order to visit wineries found throughout the country.

Now the case of Rol Freund (Trossingen, 1942) is truly a curious one, as he enjoys studies in archeology, philology and economics and science, yet in the year 1981 he decided to introduce himself in the world of wine with the opening of a small establishment specialized in wine and food products. Three years later he founded a wholesale business covering wine and gourmet products (Weinkontor Freund GmbH), first importing Italian products and in 1990 opening up a broad range of Spanish wines to which Portuguese and French wines were later added.

Ambassadors of Wine

All these ambassadors of wine are in their element when brushes, balls, needles, or Hertzian waves are surrounding them, as they are veritable masters in these arts. However, when dealing with wine, what they can actually be considered is great enthusiasts and lovers of the product and of its culture. They always highlight the qualities and excellences of wine whenever they have the opportunity, which is what turns them into great and true emissaries and ambassadors of FENAVIN 2011.

Antonio López (Tomelloso, 1936) is known for his extremely realistic style. López has obtained numerous awards, amongst which the 1985 Prince of Asturias Award and the 2006 Velázquez Plastic Arts Award are to be highlighted, yet his knowledge of the wine world started early in his childhood, maintaining and enriching this relationship throughout his lifetime. Antonio López, who is also a sculptor, has made a portrait of the Royal Family, members of which truly admire the Tomelloso born artist.

The King has also spoken of his adoration for the national team's football manager, Vicente del Bosque (Salamanca, 1950), who was just recently named Marquis of Del Bosque after winning Spain's first ever World Football Cup in South Africa. Apart from the World Cup, Vicente del Bosque can also boast two UEFA Champions League titles and two national league titles, the latter with the Real Madrid Football Club. He was named Honoris Causa by the University of Castilla-La Mancha. Vicente del Bosque also participated in the presentation of FENAVIN in Madrid, where he admitted that he truly enjoys wine every time he consumes it and that it is very good for health, but always in moderation. In addition, mentioning that 'La Roja' (Spanish national football team's nickname, The Red) quite surely toasted their victory in the World Cup with a glass of wine. Wine is the only alcoholic beverage that football players are allowed to drink.

Finally, the journalist Paco García Caridad, who is currently the Director of Radio Marca, leading radio station that only covers sporting events. García Caridad is a referent in Spain's world of sports journalism.

comparacion promocion vino y vodka

Conocen y aprecian las DO.

. .) a los sumilleres rusos

Y hasta aquí mi crónica. . . .By TC.
